Clarksville, TN – After opening the season with two trips to the Eastern Time Zone, the Austin Peay State University volleyball team will stay closer to home by traveling the 60 miles north to compete at the Holiday Inn -University Plaza Invitational, Friday through Saturday, hosted by Western Kentucky at EA Diddle Arena.
The Governors will open the tournament with games against Northern Kentucky and Toledo before taking on nationally ranked host Western Kentucky.
Northern Kentucky picked up its first win of the season last weekend against DePaul at the Bowling Green Invitational in Ohio. Toledo opened the season with an impressive 3-0 start for a tournament victory at Arizona State, but went 1-2 in last weekend’s tournament hosted by Michigan. Meanwhile, the WKU No. 21 swept each of his first two tournaments of the weekend with his only loss in a midweek outing to No. 3 Louisville.
Through the spin
Right side hitter Mikayla Powell was a 2021 All-Ohio Valley Conference first-team selection after hitting 317 kills (2.60 per set) at a .313 attack rating that was second among OVC hitters and fifth best in program history.
Powell made the most of his trip to Tallahassee, recording his first 20-win performance as governor (21 wins at Florida A&M) and error-free (14-0-35) at Florida State.
The Govs right side is by far their most experienced spot with Powell (122 sets), Tegan Seyring (55 sets), and Marlayna Bullington (44 sets) back. Governors added a freshman Jamie Seward to help secure the future.
Kelsey Mead and January Bugs have teamed up at the setter this season, the fourth straight year the Governors have used a setting tandem. Mead averaged a team-leading 5.52 assists per set, while Buggs averaged 3.62 per set.
Maggie Keenan and Jaïda Clark each have 13 blocks (0.62/set) at middle tackle this season. Both Keenan and Clark enjoyed their best outing of the season at Clemson with Keenan posting six blocks and Clark five.
Erin Eisenhart picked up where she left off last season, averaging 3.81 digs per set as a libero. This follows a 2021 campaign that saw her average 3.49 digs per set.
Marlayna Bullington has a pair of double-digit outings under his belt in the first two weeks of the season, including 11 wins at Florida A&M last weekend.
She was also the No. 2 defender for APSU Govs in the back row, amassing 3.00 digs per set.
Austin Peay State University joined the college conference realignment movement last season, with its move to the ASUN conference becoming official on July 1.
