Is the stock market closed today on Mahashivratri?

NEW DELHI: Equity, currency and derivatives markets will be closed for trading on Tuesday, March 1, as the street and the nation observe Maha Shivratri.

Commodities markets will be closed for the morning session but will open in the evening.

The market will resume its activities on Wednesday March 2, 2022.

Even though the benchmarks have managed to regain some ground over the past two days, the market continues to suffer from the volatile situation in Europe.

On Monday, under pressure from weak global signals, the indices opened with declines, but ultimately the national indices staged a strong rally led by metals stocks. However, selling in banks and financials limited gains.

The 30-pack of Sensex shares climbed 388.76 points or 0.70% to close at 56,247.28. Its broader counterpart NSE Nifty advanced 135.50 points or 0.81% to 16,7933.90.

The breadth of the market was in favor of the winners as 2,115 stocks ended in the green, while 1,332 names settled with cuts. As many as 103 stocks hit 52-week highs, mostly in the small cap space.

Meanwhile, 56 names hit 52-week lows, mostly in the microcaps space. About 15 stocks reached the upper limits of the circuit and 4 lower limits of the circuit.

Global markets paused on Tuesday after days of volatility with Asian stocks up slightly and gold down slightly as investors watched the conflict in Ukraine unfold and weighed its economic implications, including on relates to energy prices.

MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific stocks outside Japan gained 0.5%, while Japan’s Nikkei jumped 1.5% in early trading.

Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 index rose 1.38%, boosted by financial and technology stocks ahead of a central bank policy meeting, and Chinese blue chips rose 0.5%.
