Maharashtra holiday today, February 7, 2022, has been declared as a mark of respect for the passing of veteran singer, Lata Mangeshkar. The singer died yesterday, February 6, 2022 at the age of 92 after being admitted to the intensive care unit at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai due to a positive diagnosis of COVID and pneumonia. The singer was admitted on January 8, 2022.

Following the state funeral announcement, CM Uddha Thackeray has declared a public holiday today – February 7, 2022, in the state of Maharashtra to mourn the death of the legendary singer. All schools, colleges, banks and offices must remain closed as a sign of respect and mourning for the deceased soul.

A state funeral was announced for the singer and followed by the observance of a national mourning for two days to honor her life. The national flag will fly at half mast for two days.

Lata Mangeshkar, despite mild symptoms, had been admitted to intensive care due to her age. She continued to show improvement until Saturday, when hospital authorities had to put her on a ventilator due to her deteriorating condition.

Lata Mangeshkar is often called the “Nightingale of India”. With a singing career spanning over seven decades, she had captured the hearts of millions with her angelic voice. Ms. Mangeshkar has over 30,000 songs credited to her name in multiple languages.

The Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhusan and Dadasaheb Plake awards are just some of the honors received by the veteran singer. She began her career at the age of 13, after the death of her father, as an actress-singer in Maratha films. At the age of 15, his career reached great heights after his song “Aayega Aanewala” from the movie Mahal became a hit. Since then, she has been a major pillar in playback as well as the Indian music industry.
