A man was appalled by what he claims was the condition of his Holiday Inn hotel room which contained rotting food on the floor, dust and a dirty item of clothing behind the bed.

David Craig wanted to meet up with friends and had booked a night at the Holiday Inn Express, but was disgusted after making the crude discovery behind the bed in his room, the Daily recording reports.

The 52-year-old mechanic found what he says was a dirty pair of women’s underwear after moving the bed to collect his car keys.

Pieces of rotting food were also strewn across the floor in addition to a layer of dust that suggested it hadn’t been cleaned in some time, David claims.

He says hotel staff have apologized but he fears rooms are not being thoroughly cleaned amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

David told the Record: “We booked a few nights in Inverness to see old friends and on the morning of January 6 I put my keys on the back of the bed where the headboard is.

“I got the bed out and there was a dirty pair of women’s underwear and there were also bits of food and a disgusting amount of dust.

“You could clearly see he hadn’t been touched in a while.

“We certainly didn’t expect a room like this, especially with the virus going around.”

The hotel’s website in Inverness, Scotland, promises “daily housekeeping” as part of its services.

David said it was obvious some parts of the room hadn’t been cleaned in a while

And a statement from parent company IHG on the webpage promises, “IHG has a long-standing commitment to rigorous cleaning procedures.”

However, David remains concerned that hotels are not cleaning rooms properly between guests.

He added: “Hotel staff apologized and changed rooms and let us stay for nothing.

“We don’t mind but people need to know what’s going on in hotels.

“This area of the room has just been completely ignored.

“If it had been nice and clean behind the bed and we had found a pair of underwear, you would think it might be a unique piece.

“But it was clear the bed hadn’t moved in a while.

“It ruined the rest of our stay. One would expect to find the room completely clean, especially now.”.

A spokesperson for the Holiday Inn Express said: “Overall the Holiday Inn Express Inverness has an excellent cleanliness record, but on this occasion there was a clear breach of standards.

“The hotel has apologized to the guest regarding this matter, which was immediately rectified directly with the guest.”
