Mexican buyers will be allowed to re-enter the United States for the holiday season

BROWNSVILLE, TX (ValleyCentral) – In early November, non-essential travelers from Mexico will be allowed to visit and shop in the United States.

Fully vaccinated visitors will be allowed entry into the United States on November 8.

Representative Henry Cuellar said border economies were suffering around the same time last year due to the lack of Mexican buyers.

“We were getting 18 million Mexicans who would come and spend $ 19 billion,” he said.

Brownsville Mayor Trey Mendez said the city as a whole managed to avoid losses and in fact saw an increase in sales tax revenue this year despite the loss of international buyers.

“It’s a great year for Brownsville, we’ve done some fantastic things economically, but I know it’s going to get even better this year and this is the start of it,” Mendez said.

Non-essential travelers are allowed to re-enter the country because cases of COVID-19 are low enough and vaccination rates are high enough to make travel safe.

COVID-19-related hospitalizations are again below 5% in hospital systems in the Rio Grande Valley, and cases are down from their peak in September.

“It’s a big impact and it’s something we really pushed for. I’ve been pushing for this since the start of the year since we saw the number of COVIDs start to drop and the trend was very positive in favor of safety, ”Mendez said.

The city of Brownsville has been dealing with asylum seekers and COVID-19 precautions since January, which Mendez said has prepared them to allow non-essential travelers to enter the city safely.

“We have been testing everyone for COVID, we have been immunizing against COVID for several months. We have tested tens of thousands of people, so public safety has never been a major concern for us, ”he said.

People traveling to the United States must be fully immunized with a vaccine approved by the FDA or the World Health Organization.

Congressman Cuellar said there were two main reasons travelers are being sent back to the United States: to enable those buyers to spend money and help the suffering border economies and to enable families who have not seen each other for nearly two years to be reunited for the holidays.
