The administration of Pondicherry has declared a public holiday today for schools in the Union Territory. All public and private schools in Pondicherry and Karaikal regions will remain closed today February 16, 2022 due to the Masi Magam Festival.

In Pondicherry, the government’s co-director of education, VG Sivagami, said revision exams would however take place as planned, in a press release.

Pondicherry schools for all grades and colleges reopened on 4 February 2022 after a COVID review was conducted in the Union Territory. The decision was made after the minister met with officials from the Ministry of Education.

Colleges in Pondicherry have also been instructed to operate at full capacity and have full day sessions and schools in Pondicherry will resume classes six days a week.

Masi Magham Festival: What is it?

Masi Magham is an auspicious day, celebrated during the months of February-March. February and March are known as the Tamil month of Masi according to the Gregorian calendar. Masi Magam is also known as Maha Magam, named after one of the 27 Nakshatras, Magham.

The processional deities of many temples in the Union Territory and Tamil Nadu are said to be installed by the sea for the ‘theerthavari’ (ceremonial bath) in the coastal village of Vaithikuppam. The festival takes place on the full moon day of the Tamil month of Maasi (February-March). The annual festival is celebrated when Jupiter enters the constellation Leo, which occurs once every twelve years. The festival is also associated with a purification ritual to achieve salvation and is an important event in Tamil Hindu culture.

As of Monday, February 14, the Union Territory of Pondicherry has recorded a total of COVID-19 cases at around 1 lakh cases. The positivity rate in UT is 5.18%
