Shop for duty-free clothing and school supplies during the Texas sales tax holiday August 5-7, 2022
The Comptroller encourages all taxpayers to support Texas businesses while saving money on duty-free purchases of most clothing, shoes, school supplies and backpacks (sold for less than $100) over the weekend. annual end excluding tax. Qualifying items may be purchased duty-free at a Texas store or from an online or catalog seller doing business in Texas. In most cases, you do not need to provide the seller with an exemption certificate to purchase qualifying duty-free items.
This year’s sales tax holiday begins Friday, August 5 and ends at midnight Sunday, August 7.
The sales tax exemption only applies to qualifying items you purchase during the sales tax exemption. Items you purchase before or after the sales tax exemption are not eligible for the exemption and no tax refunds are available.

Online purchases and phone orders
During the holidays, you can purchase eligible items in-store, online, by phone, by mail, by custom order or any other way. The sale of the item must take place during the specific time period. The date of purchase is easy to determine when the purchase is made in store but becomes more complicated with remote purchases. The buyer must have given consideration for the item during the period even if the item cannot be delivered until after the period ends.
For example, if a buyer enters their credit card information on an online shopping website on Sunday, August 7, 2022 at 5:00 p.m. to purchase eligible school supplies, but the school supplies will not ship until Friday, August 12 August 2022 and will not arrive until Tuesday, August 16, the purchase will still qualify for the exemption. However, if the charge to your credit card is declined by the payment processor at 11:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 7, 2022, and the buyer does not resubmit payment by Monday, August 8, the purchase is taxable.
