PADRE ISLAND, Texas – A well-known beach hotel on Padre Island will soon reopen under a new name.
The former Holiday Inn on the beach will soon be known as the Island Resort Hotel. The hotel’s general manager, Michael Corral, said the renovations will provide much-needed space and amenities.
“We have 149 rooms and we will also be a full-service restaurant, indoor and outdoor bar,” Corral said.
The hotel was closed following damage sustained by Hurricane Harvey four years ago. Corral said that despite ownership, renovations to the hotel have always been on the table.
“A new group of owners bought it about three weeks ago,” Corral said. “I purchased this hotel, which used to be the Holiday Inn, and the sister hotel behind us, which is the Holiday Inn Express. So renovations were already underway with the previous owner, and we are here to complete it. .”
Corral said the reaction from residents has been intense, and Councilman Greg Smith said the renovation is something the city has been waiting for years.
“This is exciting news for the island and this is exciting news for Corpus Christi,” Smith said. “The hotel has been out of service since Hurricane Harvey four and a half years ago, and before that it was one of our biggest HOT tax generators, the hotel and motel tax in the city So getting it back and opening it up is really positive for us.”
Corral said his biggest challenge was finding the roughly 60 employees he needed to staff the hotel.
“That was the biggest challenge,” Corral said. “I’m looking for people who want to work. So I’m constantly recruiting online and on the street, so if anyone’s looking for work, 1502 Windward Drive. Come see me.”
The hotel is next to the only public car park on the dike and is well located for tourists. Corral hopes to have the business up and running very soon.
