ELLICOTTVILLE – Having opened the day after Thanksgiving, Holiday Valley Resort is already celebrating its 15th day of skiing today, giving the 2018-19 season a good start.

Weather permitting, Holiday Valley is expected to open 85% of its trails this weekend, Marketing Director Jane Eshbaugh said.

“We’ve been very lucky we’ve been able to get a lot of snow in addition to 65 inches of natural snow so far this season,” Eshbaugh said Monday.

“It motivates people to buy passes and have a good time,” she said of the snow. “It’s good publicity.

The snow also adds to the quality of skiing at the resort, which has hundreds of snow cannons to make snow in a variety of conditions.

“We snowed everywhere except the Eagle area,” Eshbaugh said. “If all goes well, we could ski 85% of the area this weekend. By Christmas, we hope that everything will be open.

The week between Christmas and New Years is one of the busiest times at the resort, Eshbaugh said. Still, it depends on the weather. “It will be a nice cool week until Friday and Saturday when it warms up and then cools down again,” she said. “Looks good for Christmas.”

At its peak, the resort had approximately 1,300 seasonal employees, including restaurant workers.

The Holiday Valley Tube Park off Route 242 north of Ellicottville opens on December 22.

This coming weekend is one that many skiers look forward to every year, Demo Day. It’s Saturday in front of the Holiday Valley Lodge – on the slopes.

Connect with manufacturers to try out their new gear for a race or two on the tracks. Then if you see something you like, they’ll likely have what you’re looking for from one of the event’s four sponsors: Mud, Sweat & Gears, City Garage, The Boardroom, and Holiday Valley.

“We’re really happy with what we’ve seen so far,” Eshbaugh said. “We keep our fingers crossed that it will be a good winter. “
